Atlatl Demonstration

Saturday, March 12, 2011 – (1:00 pm – 2:30 pm)

The atlatl, a primitive dart throwing weapon, has been a primary weapon for thousands of years and is still in use to this day. Join the park naturalist at the atlatl field to learn and experience first hand the grace and power of this weapon that would end up shaping human culture. This is a free event where participants learn about and get to throw atlatl darts.

Ghost Hunt

Saturday, March 26, 2011 – (9:30 pm – 3:30 am)

Join the park staff for a night of investigating at Big Bone Lick State Park. Learn the various ins and outs of ghost hunting by seeing and getting familiar with some commonly used tools during an investigation. The staff will have digital voice recorders, emf detectors and motion sensors on hand that participants can use for the investigation. While on the investigation you will learn a lot about the history of this famous location including the park ground, church, and cemeteries. Please bring a digital camera if you have one available. Registration required. Cost: $25.00 per person, $40.00 couples.

Save an Endangered Species Day

Friday, April 22, 2011 – (9:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Big Bone Lick State Park is one of the few places in the world where the federally endangered plant, Running Buffalo Clover, can be found. Unfortunately, the loss of wild roaming bison, increase of invasive species and agricultural practices have pushed this plant to the verge of extinction. We invite anyone who is interested in helping save an endangered species to join the naturalist staff at Big Bone for on site habitat restoration of the Running Buffalo Clover.

Campers Appreciation Weekend

April 29 – 30, 2011

If you are a camping enthusiast, you don’t want to miss your chance to camp two nights for the price of one! While camping, you can take part in our guided hikes, crafts and naturalist programs here at the park.

Tomahawk Class

Saturday, May 21, 2011 (12:00 pm – 3:00 pm)

Tomahawks have been in use for thousands of years for warfare and self defense. During the 1800’s and early 1900’s as pioneers were traveling further west across North America the tomahawk was a common item to have on hand. During this event you will learn about some of the history of the tomahawk, be taught how to throw a tomahawk and get to compete in a tomahawk throwing contest. Registration required. Cost: $5.00 per person

Lick the Wild: Salt Making

Sunday, June 12, 2011 – (9:00 am – 3:00 pm)

Salt has been a precious resource in the Big Bone lick region for thousands of years. Many animals from the Ice Ages through the present day came to the springs in order to get the salt and minerals they needed in order to survive. This program will give you the knowledge on how to process salt out in the wild and what you can use it for if you are ever lost or stuck in a natural disaster zone for an extended period of time. Registration required. Cost: $20.00 per person.

Pirate Week

June 22 – 25, 2011

Avast, ya land lubbers! We be havin’ all o’ tha pirates in thee area o’er fer a pirate get tagether at Big Bone Lick. We’ll be a plai’n our favrit pirate games an’ rais’n cane ontha Big Bone Seas. That’s not all we pirate’s ‘el be upta during the week as the cap’n will have a special party fer all ‘o ya sea dogs an’ lots mer. Dinnae firget ta bring yer best pirate outfit and decorate yer landing dock fer thee decoratin’ contest. So set yer sails ya swabbies an’ have a swimmin’ good time, just be careful er tha cap’n might make ya walk ther plank! Gar, ta take part in thee festivities ye must be a campin’ at tha park durin’ pirate week.

Creek Stomping

Explore a region of the park that will surely get you swimming with pleasure. Join the naturalist to see all the wonders that can be experienced in Big Bone Creek as you stay cool while learning about nature. Caution: You will get extremely wet. Parents must accompany children.

Lick the Wild: Atlatls

Saturday, July 23, 2011 – (9:00 am – 3:00 pm)

When out in the wilderness prehistoric people all over the world, for thousands of years, turned to the atlatl for protection and acquiring food. The atlatl, a primitive dart throwing weapon, is also very useful in a survival situation as it is much easier to create than a bow. During this program you will be taught how to throw an atlatl; then you will get the chance to make your own atlatl and dart without modern tools. Registration required. Cost: $30.00 per person

Lick the Wild: Fire Starting: The hand drill method

Saturday, August 27, 2011 – (9:00 am – 3:00 pm)

Would you know what to do if you are lost in the woods, your lighter is gone, you didn’t bring matches and you have no modern way to start a fire? Fire is important not only for protection, purifying water, and warmth, but also for a mental boost. Once you create fire in a survival situation things just seem to fall in place. This class will teach you one of the many ways to start a fire just like many prehistoric people use to do. During this class the survival instructor will teach the methods and materials needed in order to create a fire using a few simple items that can be found in nature. Registration required. Cost: $30.00 per person

Lick the Wild: Survival Skills Weekend

September 9 – 11, 2011

Join the park naturalist for a full weekend of pre-historic based survival training at Big Bone Lick State Park. Taught from a “no modern tools” perspective, these classes are designed to teach you how to cope with various difficulties when in survival situations. The weekend will have hands-on demonstrations detailing how to use items found out in nature to help you survive. Registration required. Cost: $75.00 person. Price includes 2 nights camping in the naturalist programming area.

Bad to the Bone Duathlon

The Friends of Big Bone and Big Bone Lick State Park will be hosting the Bad to the Bone Duathlon on September 17, 2011! The run, bike, run format which starts at 8:30 AM, features views of some of the most beautiful scenery in Kentucky like pleasant valleys, peaceful pastures, enchanting woodland trails, as well as roads and towns along the Ohio River. Racers will need the tranquil scenery to deal with the physical toughness of the running trails & bike courses. For more information contact: plense@friendsofbigbone.org

Salt Festival

October 14 – 16, 2011

Journey back in time as Big Bone returns to days long past. There will be numerous hands on demonstrations and activities for people of all ages; including flint-knapping, pioneer life, salt making, weaving, spear throwing, storytelling, music, atlatl tossing, and lots more. Browse the crafters corner to see the many wondrous hand crafted items for sale; then refresh yourself and your family at the food court. This year’s festival will host the second annual Big Bone Lick atlatl (spear throwing) contest! While you are visiting don’t forget to see our bison herd and newly renovated nature center.

Lick the Wild: Processing Acorns for Food

Saturday, November 12, 2011 – (9:00 am – 3:00 pm)

Acorns are an abundant food supply during times when there is little else available. The acorns are easy to gather and the best part is they don’t fight back; unless one drops on your head while you are gathering them. As a survival food they are great, however they must be processed correctly or this food supply can make you very ill due to the tannic acid present in the acorns. Learn what acorns to look for, where to look for them and how to process them during this informative hands on class. Registration required. Cost: $25.00 per person.
